Join our Assam Adventure Journey with your fellow explorers and enjoy women-centric travel at it’s most stimulating. 

 

You and your small group will enjoy traditional Assamese cuisine as you travel on this thrilling tour of waterfalls, islands, tribal villages, Unesco sites, National Parks and tea plantations.

 

Your experience includes:

Twin accommodations, all breakfasts, private vehicle and driver, internal flights, cruise boat, Kaziranga safaris and meals as indicated. 

 

Your tour is flexible to allow you leisure time to explore the markets, working farms and tribal villages.

 

ROUTE:

 

We’ll be travelling by air from Kolkata to Guwahati, then overland to Shillong, Mawphlang, Dawki, Meghalaya, 

Kaziranga, Jorhat, Majuli Island and Guwahati. Transfer to our houseboat for two nights then return by air to Kolkata and onward travel.

INTINERARY

Day 1

Arrive Kolkata and transfer to hotel. Optional sightseeing/rest. Dinner at your leisure. Overnight Kolkata.

 

Day 2

Fly to Guwahati, and transfer to Shillong arriving late afternoon. Dinner at your leisure.

Overnight Shillong.

Day 3

Full day tour of Shillong.

Early morning visit to the grand canyon of Meghalaya. Spend time here soaking in the peace of the hills before visiting the Don Bosco Center of indigenous Cultures. Showcasing the cultures and tribes of North East India, this museum holds collections of music, architecture, food, family, textiles and livelihood of the ihabitants.

 

Visit to the farmers market of Shillong. This is a lively market used by the locals for fruit, vegetables, spices, flowers, fish and meat.

Great for candid photography.

 

We’ll walk in the Police Bazaar before returning to our hotel in evening. Dinner at your leisure. Overnight Shillong.

 

Day 4

Transfer to Mawphlang, one hour away from Shillong.  Known for its sacred forests and monolith stones, we’ll visit Elephant Falls enroute.

 

Tour of the sacred forest in Mawphlang. Learn about the forest herbs and their uses in the ancient ritual rites of indigenous Khasi people. 

 

Dinner at your leisure.

Day 5 

After breakfast visit the Nohkalikai falls and Arwah caves in Cherrapunjee. The Arwah caves contain fossils of organisms that were once under the sea. Nohkalikai Falls have their own interesting history as well. Afternoon visit to Daintlen and Weisodong water falls. 

Barbeque dinner.

Overnight Mawphlang Homestay.

 

Day 6

Breakfast, then drive to Dawki via Riwai village. Visit the living root bridge which is a specialty of Meghalaya. Reach Dawki by noon and spend afternoon on the Umngot River. Dinner at your leisure. Overnight Dawki.

Day 7

Morning boat ride on the crystal clear, Umngot River. Visit Krang Shuri Falls and the monolith village in Jaintia hills. 

Dinner at your leisure.

Day 8

Transfer to a village of indigenous people of Meghalaya - Niam Khasi people and experience rural life the way it is. Dinner at your leisure. Overnight traditional Khasi hut.

 

Day 9

Indigenous people of Meghalaya are animist and follow Donyi-Polo practices which is worship of the sun, moon and other elements of nature.

 

Today we’ll go for a village to visit local homes. The people grow broomsticks, pineapples, oranges and cardamom as main cash crops. They also have an interesting traditions - such as naming their newborn after a song tune.

Day 10

After breakfast, drive to Kaziranga National Park. We’ll reach by evening with stops along the way.

Day 11

Early morning safari in Kaziranga National Park. Return to the hotel after safari for breakfast. Relax or explore the area by our hotel. 

 

Evening jeep safari in either central or western range of Kaziranga National Park. During our two safaris, you will see birds: Serpent Eagle, Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Whistling Teal, Pelican. Resident animals are: Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, Wild Buffalo, Elephant, Deer, Tiger, Bear and reptiles - 

Python, Monitor Lizard etc.

Day 12

Today we explore the local tea gardens and factories in Jorhat. Jorhat is known as the tea capital of Assam - remember to take a souvenir of your visit!

Day 13

Early morning, we take a local ferry to Unesco Majuli island, across the Brahmaputra river.

 

The island is the world’s largest and the seat of neo-Vaishnavism in Assam.

 

Afternoon to explore the area at your leisure. In the evening, we'll go for a village walk where you can see 

women weaving clothes outside their homes. Visit a local temple in the evening to see the daily ceremonies.

Day 14

Today we’ll visit the local monasteries.

Neo-Vaishnavism in the monasteries each has its own specialty. We’ll tour 

Garamur, Auniati and Dakhinpat monasteries known for mask making, traditional Assamese arts and architecture.

 

Later, we’ll see a village of the Mishing tribe and share a traditional family meal.

Day 15

Take morning ferry from Majuli to mainland Assam and drive to Guwahati.

Packed breakfast and stops enroute for sightseeing.

Dinner at your leisure.

Overnight Guwahati.

 

Day 16

Visit the Holy Kamakhya temple situated on top of the Nilachal Hills and learn the story behind Goddess 

Kama-Khya and its significance in the lives of locals of Assam.

 

Board your house boat and sail towards Sualkuchi village. We’ll moor at an island for the night where we will setup a bonfire and barbeque. Overnight houseboat.

 

Day 17

After breakfast, we’ll cruise the rest of the distance to Sualkuchi.

Sualkuchi is a great place for those interested in traditional textiles.

Most families have been involved in handlooms for generations.

These hand operated looms are also called ‘taatxaal’ by them.

See how the traditional designs are applied to ‘Mekhela Chadar’ - since the times of the Ahom kings of Assam. This is a two piece cloth that is wrapped around dancers during Rongali Bihu festival.

The Mekhela Chadar has designs in shape of a crescent moon, animals, flowers, peacock and geometrics.

You can also interact with the artisans and learn about the art of creating these designs.

 

Return to our houseboat and sail towards Kajoli Choki, the confluence of rivers Kolong and Brahmaputra.

 

Reach Kojoli Choki and moor at the island for overnight stay.

Buffet dinner.

Day 18

After morning tea, we’ll disembark and go for a jeep safari in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is small but holds a plethora of wildlife and many Rhinos .

 

Return to the boat for breakfast and sail back to Guwahati. Arrive by noon and transfer for afternoon flight back to Kolkata. Dinner at your leisure. Overnight Kolkata.

Onward flight home.
