AGRA FROM DELHI DAY TOUR
"India saw from the beginning, and, even in her ages of reason and her age of increasing ignorance, she never lost hold of the insight,
that life cannot be rightly seen in the sole light, cannot be perfectly lived in the sole power of its externalities." - Sri Aurobindo
Your private tour begins at your New Delhi hotel or IDG airport. Pick-up is at 6:30 am. The drive to Agra takes approximately 3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. We will stop en route mid-morning for coffee/light snack.
Our first memorial is the beautiful Taj Mahal – the stunning monument to Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan’s beloved wife. Designed and built over 22 years by Persian architect Ustad Isa, it stands forever as a testament to the heart-broken Shah’s undying love.
Lesser known, but still impressive, is the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah called the “Baby Taj”. The buildings are smaller but wonderfully decorated with painted and raised plaster designs.
Another famous monument we’ll see is Agra Fort. This was built as the summer palace of Shan Jahan and from the high terrace you can view the Taj Mahal
in the distance. Built of intricately embellished red sandstone it provides a distinct contrast to the marble palaces within.
Tea stop and light lunch en route to our next monument - The Tomb of Akbar the Great.
Located in Sikander, 5 km outside Agra, it is also called Akbar's Mausoleum. This masterpiece of architecture was constructed in the 1600's and is noteworthy for the beautiful sandstone buildings inlaid with marble and slate. One of the greatest Mughal rulers, Akbar's tomb is a fitting monument to his life and accomplishments. The grounds extend for over 119 acres, hosting a wildlife park, expansive gardens and several tall minarets.
Fatehpur Sikri, the ancient city that Emperor Akbar built (but only occupied for 10 years), is on our afternoon itinerary before we return to Delhi.
